Newfoundland 1894 10 cents
This specimen was lot 31215 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 10 Cents, 1894. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-64. This sparkling near-Gem offers bright and flashy lustrous fields with frosty devices. The crisp and well-formed design features pop out when rotated in the light against the cartwheel effects adding to its pleasing appearance. Ex: The Cook Collection." This specimen is a common date of a type struck in London and Birmingham in 1865, 1870-76, 1880-90, 1894-96. Canada debased her silver dimes from .925 to .800 in 1920 but Newfoundland did not follow suit until 1945. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
