The first specimen was lot 20845 in Heritage sale 3008 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "Newfoundland. Victoria 20 Cents 1894, Obverse 2, MS64 PCGS. Scattered silver-gray patina with full underlying luster and a bold strike. Very scarce in this Choice condition. Included is the insert showing that this piece was also certified as MS64 by ICCS." The second specimen was lot 50371 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $365. The catalog description[2] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 20 Cents, 1894. PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder. Unpriced in Cha[r]lton above EF. Obverse 2." This type was struck fairly steadily for Newfoundland 1865-1900, which preferred twenty cent pieces to the quarters used in Canada proper. It is rather low priced in circulated condition but rare in high grade. The smallness and poverty of the colony kept mintages low. This date is priced about double the common date (1872-H or 1899).

Recorded mintage: 100,000.

Specification: 4.71 g, 0.925 fine silver, .140 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 4.
