Newfoundland 1888 5 cents
This specimen was lot 71215 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 5 Cents, 1888. London Mint. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Dot after NEWFOUNDLAND variety. Though emanating from a mintage of 40,000 pieces, few are ever encountered in Mint State grades such as this example, making it incredibly RARE. Accordingly, one would expect this specimen to garner a great deal of attention and focus as it offers beautiful, argent surfaces and some golden peripheral toning." This type was struck fairly steadily for Newfoundland 1865-96. Of the 1,140,000 struck of the type, 400,000 were made in 1896. It is a trifle heavier than the Canadian five cent piece of the period. This date was struck at London and is quite scarce in all grades.
Recorded mintage: 40,000.
Specification: 1.17 g, 0.925 fine silver, .035 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
