This specimen was lot 1704 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $411.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEWFOUNDLAND: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR 5 cents, 1885. The lowest mintage date of the series with 16,000 pieces struck, NGC graded EF40." This type was struck fairly steadily for Newfoundland 1865-96. Of the 1,140,000 struck of the type, 400,000 were made in 1896. It is a trifle heavier than the Canadian five cent piece of the period. This date was struck at London and is scarce in all grades.
