Newfoundland 1888 20 cents
This specimen was lot 33622 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "Canada: Newfoundland Pair of Certified 20 Cents PCGS, 1) Victoria 20 Cents 1888 - XF45, London mint; 2) George V 20 Cents 1912 - MS63, Ottawa mint, KM 15." This type was struck fairly steadily for Newfoundland 1865-1901, which preferred twenty cent pieces to the quarters used in Canada proper. It is rather low priced in circulated condition but rare in high grade. The smallness and poverty of the colony kept mintages low. This date is priced about half again the common date (1872-H or 1899).
Recorded mintage: 75,000.
Specification: 4.71 g, 0.925 fine silver, .140 troy oz ASW.
