Mexico 1905 5 pesos rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen is the key date of a series struck intermittently 1905-55 at the Mexico City mint. This 5 pesos gold piece is half the weight of the "balance scale" 5 pesos gold piece struck 1870-1905 under the Republic. The type is familiar to bullion investors as the 1955 five pesos has been restruck in large quantities by the Mexican government. However, the 1905 is rare.

The last branch mints, Zacatecas and Culiacan, were closed in 1905 and all official Mexican coinage since has borne the Mexico City mintmark ("M" or "Mo").

Specification: 4.17 g, 0.900 fine gold, .120 troy oz AGW.

Recorded mintage: 18,000.

Catalog reference: Fr-168; KM-464.
