Mexico 1906-M 5 pesos
The first specimen was lot 2536 in Goldberg sale 103 (Los Angeles, February 2018), where it sold for $170.37. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. 5 Pesos, 1906-M. Head of Hidalgo left. PCGS graded MS-63. Ex Gene Autry Collection." This specimen is a common date of a series struck intermittently 1905-07, 1910, 1918-20, 1955 at the Mexico City mint. This five pesos gold piece is half the weight of the "balance scale" five pesos gold piece struck 1870-1905 under the Republic. The type is familiar to bullion investors as the 1955 five pesos has been restruck in large quantities by the Mexican government. The last branch mints, Zacatecas and Culiacan, were closed in 1905 and all official Mexican coinage since has borne the Mexico City mintmark ("M" or "Mo").
