Mexico SB1115-42645r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42645 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Pesos, 1907/6-M. NGC MS-63. The only piece at this numeric grade with only two examples certified finer (both MS-64) at either NGC or PCGS. Requires magnification, but the overdate is clear and without doubt. Krause lists the variety without a price, suggesting it is scarce, this confirmed by the census data with only 3 examples submitted for grading so far. Premium quality for the grade, with no marks worthy of note." This specimen is the key date of a series struck intermittently 1905-55 at the Mexico City mint. This five pesos gold piece is half the weight of the "balance scale" five pesos gold piece struck 1870-1905 under the Republic. The type is familiar to bullion investors as the 1955 five pesos has been restruck in large quantities by the Mexican government. However, the 1907/6 is rare tho the regular date is common.

The last branch mints, Zacatecas and Culiacan, were closed in 1905 and all official Mexican coinage since has borne the Mexico City mintmark ("M" or "Mo").

Recorded mintage: 1,088,000.

Specification: 4.17 g, 0.900 fine gold, .120 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-168; KM-464.
