Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 40325

This specimen was lot 40325 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $18,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Pesos, 1891-Cn M. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-65. Rare date. Missing in the collection of the Banco de Mexico and most other major collections. Finest of only three graded at NGC. A beautiful example of this rarity. From the Kirk Menczer Collection." The Culiacan mint struck this denomination 1873-77, 1888-91, 1894-95, 1900 and 1903. Altho the mintage is typical for this type, and it is marked as common in the SCWC, there are no common dates for this mint. This example realized fifteen times the catalog value.

Specification: 8.46 g, 0.875 fine gold, .238 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
