Mexico 1884-As L 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71236

This specimen was lot 71236 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1884-As L. Alamos Mint. NGC MS-65. Finest of only two graded at NGC. Other coin is VF-35. Highest graded and only MS-65 Alamos 10 Centavos at NGC. Stunning example of this scarce mint. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The Alamos mint struck silver ten centavos 1874-76, 1878-80, 1886-95 and this is a fairly common date. The SCWC states a number of dates of the five centavos (1878-80 and 1886) were struck using gold peso obverse dies, but this was not done for the ten centavos.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the mint.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge.
