Mexico 1816-Mo JJ 2 escudos
The first specimen was lot 3239 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1816 JJ 2 escudos. Mexico City mint. EF details (NCS). Types as above. Lustrous, pale gold, vertical planchet flaw and moderately heavy hairlines behind Fernando's portrait. A very attractive specimen. From B. Max Mehl’s sale of the Thomas W. Voetter Collection, January 1943, Lot 43." The second specimen was lot 4718 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it sold for $2,415. The catalog description[2] noted, "Mexico. 2 Escudos, 1816-Mo JJ. Fernando VII. Bare laureate bust to right. Reverse: Crowned Hapsburg arms within chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Mintmark at lower left and assayers' initials at lower right, separated by fleece. A pleasing lustrous coin with light golden toning. NGC graded AU-58."
All dos escudos of Mexico are scarce, the colonial issues more so, and the standard bust issues of Ferdinand VII especially so. A few dozen examples may exist of all dates (1814-20) together.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW. The Eliasberg specimen: 6.75 grams, 22.60 mm diameter.
