Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 42619
SB0123-42619r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42619 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Durango. War of Independence. Real, 1816-D. Durango Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC EF Details--Environmental Damage." This enigmatic copper coin was struck in Durango by the royalists in 1814-18. Its face value is 1/4 tlaco or 1/8 real. Survivors are nearly always in low grade. There are other copper coins of the same period, 1/8 pilon (1/16 real) and 2/4 senal (1/4 real). Attempts by colonial authorities to issue copper coins in Mexico had failed before and this type was no exception. After independence, state and federal authorities issued massive quantities of copper and brass coins, fully justifying the people's distrust of such fiat coinage.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14802, KM-61; Cal-1540.
