This specimen was lot 11112 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence Durango. 4 Reales, 1816-MZ. VERY RARE. Typical crude manufacture. Pierced at 12 o'clock and scratch across neck. Toned. VERY GOOD." The four reales was the least frequently issued silver denomination during the war of independence. They were minted at Durango 1814, 1816 and 1817; all dates are rare. This example has the obverse legend misspelled "DEI·GRAITA·".

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 13.54 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .390 troy oz ASW.
