Mexico 1652-Mo P 4 reales
The first specimen was lot 484 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $714. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, cob 4 reales, 1652/1P, NGC XF 40. Bold full date (actually looks like 52/51/49, but unlisted in KM and Calico as an overdate in any case) and oMP, nearly full but somewhat flat shield and cross, deeply toned all over. NGC #5850122-002." This specimen is a silver cob four reales struck at Mexico City 1621-65. Specimens with clear dates are unusual. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to 0.917 fine silver. The second specimen was lot 42501 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1652-Mo P. Mexico City Mint. Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Test Cut, VF Details."
