Mexico 1654-Mo P real
This specimen was lot 42507 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1654-P. Philip IV (1621-65). NGC VF-20. Clear assayer initial, partial date with last digit clear, plus readily identifiable for type. Deep tone within the recessed areas, especially on the reverse, that lend a classic 'pirate booty' look to the coin. Pedigree: From the David O'Harrow Collection. Ex: Richard Long Sale of July 31, 1995." This specimen is a silver cob one real struck at Mexico City 1621-65. Specimens with clear dates are unusual. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to 0.917 fine silver.
