Mexico 1653-Mo P 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71663 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1653-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer P. Philip IV. PCGS VF-35. This Cob shows a clear date and mintmark on its obverse. The reverse is missing some detail due to the short flan but displays the remaining portions of the devices handsomely. The surfaces are attractively toned with hints of golden color and some remaining luster, though some spots of encrustation are noted for completeness. A presentable example for the date. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Privately purchased from Richard Ponterio." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1634-65 with assayer "P". Unlike those of Bolivia, few of these early cobs have legible dates.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.61 g.
