This specimen was lot 72565 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1649-Mo P. Mexico City Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Excessively Clipped, VF Details. Despite some clipping, this example retains presentable details and charming color to the surfaces." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1634-65 with assayer "P". Unlike those of Bolivia, few of these early cobs have legible dates, which is why a clipped coin, normally considered uncollectible, becomes worth $216.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver.
