Mexico 1611-Mo F 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71646 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1611/0-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer F. Philip III. PCGS AU-50. A lovely silver minor with charm and originality. The obverse shows a bold denomination, mintmark, and assayer along with a very clear overdate. The Habsburg shield is well-presented, and most of the monarch's name appears on the periphery. The reverse offers attractive and complete castles and lions despite some spots of weak strike. The surfaces exhibit a warm glow due to the light toning and remaining luster. A small flan crack is noted on at 9 o'clock on the obverse side. This beautiful and wholesome example is sure to impress collectors of the Mexican series. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The SCWC mentions this type for 1607-21 and notes 1610-14 with assayer "F". Few of these early cobs have legible dates.
