Künker sale 404, lot 2314

This specimen was lot 2314 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €13,000 (about US$17,057 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF GEORG FRIEDRICH VON GREIFFENCLAU ZU VOLLRADS, 1626-1629. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Reichstaler 1629, Mainz. Münzmeister Daniel Ayrer. Stempelschneider Lorenz Schilling. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat, am Armabschnitt die Jahreszahl und Stempelschneidersignatur • 16Z9 LS//Vierfach behelmtes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Worms) mit Mittelschild von Greiffenclau-Vollrads, dahinter Schwert, Kreuz- und Krummstab gekreuzt. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Numismatica Ars Classica and Spink Taisei 52, Zürich 1994, Nr. 275 und der Slg. Heinz Beaury, Auktion Fischer 7, Bonn 2022, Nr. 5232. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, George Frederick of Greiffenclau and Vollrads, 1626-29, thaler of 1629, Mainz mint. Obverse: bust right in episcopal robes, date on truncation; reverse: triple-helmeted, quartered arms of Mainz and Worms with escutcheon of Greiffenclau-Vollrads, crozier and sword behind. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This rare type was accompanied by another thaler (Dav-5544/KM 51, facing bust, very rare), a double thaler (Dav-5542), a ducat (Fr-1641) and a ten ducats (Fr-1642a).
