Mainz 1636-BS thaler Dav-5548
This specimen was lot 2338 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €420 (about US$551 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ANSELM CASIMIR WAMBOLDT VON UMSTADT, 1629-1647. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Reichstaler 1636, Mainz. 26,42 g. Münzmeister Benedikt Stephani. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Dreifach behelmtes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Wamboldt-Umstadt), dahinter Schwert und Krummstab gekreuzt, oben zu den Seiten des Kreuzes die Jahreszahl 1636 und die Signatur BS. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Münzzentrum Rheinland 193, Solingen-Ohligs 2021, Nr. 2443. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt of Umstadt, 1629-47, thaler of 1636, Mainz mint. Obverse: bust right in episcopal robe; reverse: triple helmeted, quartered arms of Mainz and Wamboldt-Umstadt, crozier and sword behind, above, date and initials. Small planchet defects, choice very fine.)"
This type was struck 1636-37, 1641 and undated. Another thaler of 1636, Dav-5547, has the bishop dressed in a different robe.
