Künker sale 386, lot 4716

This specimen was lot 4716 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €550 (about US$711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-1647. Reichstaler 1637, BS, Mainz. Winz. Prägeschwäche am Rand, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-47, thaler of 1637, Mainz mint. Weakly struck on the edge, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck 1636-37 and 1641 along with some undated strikes. Anselm Casimir also struck some very similar thalers (Dav-5549) with the date at the bottom of the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.55 g.

Catalog reference: KM 65, Dav-5548; Slg. Walther 255 var; Slg. Pick 361 var.
