Künker sale 386, lot 4718

This specimen was lot 4718 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €650 (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-1647. Reichstaler 1639, BS, Mainz. Sehr schön. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-47, thaler of 1639, Mainz mint. Very fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck 1637-39. Anselm Casimir also struck some very similar thalers (Dav-5548) with the date in the legend.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.87 g.

Catalog reference: KM 70, Dav-5549; Slg. Walther 266 var; Slg. Pick 377.
