Mainz 1642-MG thaler Dav-5553
This specimen was lot 4719 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-1647. Reichstaler 1642, MG, Mainz. RR Sehr schön +. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-47, thaler of 1642, Mainz mint. Very rare, choice very fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck 1642 only. The front facing portrait suggests that this piece was not intended for extensive circulation.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.72 g.
