Mainz 1641-BS thaler Dav-5548
This specimen was lot 2344 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ANSELM CASIMIR WAMBOLDT VON UMSTADT, 1629-1647. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Reichstaler 1641, Mainz. Münzmeister Benedikt Stephani. Mit verändertem Porträt und auf Vorder- und Rückseite andere Interpunktion. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Dreifach behelmtes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Wamboldt-Umstadt), dahinter Schwert und Krummstab gekreuzt, darunter die geteilte Signatur B - S, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 41. Feine Tönung, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Teutoburger Münzauktion 129, Borgholzhausen 2020, Nr. 1992. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt of Umstadt, 1629-47, thaler of 1641, Mainz mint. Obverse: bust right in episcopal robe; reverse: triple helmeted, quartered arms of Mainz and Wamboldt-Umstadt, crozier and sword behind, above, date and initials. Fine toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1636-37, 1641 and undated. There are several closely related thalers which vary in the position of the date.
