Mainz 1644-ET 2 thaler Dav-A5554
This specimen was lot 2335 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,575 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ANSELM CASIMIR WAMBOLDT VON UMSTADT, 1629-1647. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler 1644, Mainz. Münzmeister Ernst Textor. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Dreifach behelmtes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Wamboldt- Umstadt), dahinter Schwert und Krummstab gekreuzt, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 41. Von großer Seltenheit. Dunkler Belag, halb entfernter Henkel, gereinigt mit Kratzern, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Teutoburger Münzauktion 114, Borgholzhausen 2018, Nr. 2232. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt of Umstadt, 1629-47, thick double thaler of 1644, Mainz mint. Obverse: bust right in episcopal robe; reverse: triple helmeted, quartered arms of Mainz and Wamboldt-Umstadt, crozier and sword behind, date above. Extremely rare, dark toning, mount remnant on edge, harshly cleaned, very fine.)"
This type was struck 1644 only. It is rare; this example brought only €1,200 because of the mount remnant and harsh cleaning.
