Künker sale 386, lot 4717

This specimen was lot 4717 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,551 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-1647. Reichstaler 1638, BS, Mainz. Kleines Brustbild. Schöne Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Erworben von der Münzenhandlung Waldemar Wruck, Berlin. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt von Umstadt, 1629-47, thaler of 1638, Mainz mint, small bust. Nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck 1637-39. Anselm Casimir also struck some very similar thalers (Dav-5548) with the date in the legend.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.79 g.
