Künker sale 404, lot 2351

This specimen was lot 2351 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €130 (about US$171 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ANSELM CASIMIR WAMBOLDT VON UMSTADT, 1629-1647. Prägungen aus der Münzstätte Mainz im Rahmen des Münzvereins mit Frankfurt, Hessen- Darmstadt und Nassau-Saarbrücken. 2 Kreuzer (1/2 Batzen, Albus) 1636, Mainz. Gemeinschaftsprägung mit Frankfurt, Hessen-Darmstadt und Nassau-Saarbrücken. Münzmeister Benedikt Stephani. Reichsapfel, darin Wertzahl 2, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl/ /Zwillingsfadenkreuz, in den Winkeln je ein Wappen (Mainz, Hessen- Darmstadt/Nassau/Frankfurt). Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Heinz Beaury, Auktion Fischer 7, Bonn 2022, Nr. 5386 (Lot). (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Casimir Wamboldt of Umstadt, 1629-47, double kreuzer, albus or half batzen of 1636, Mainz mint, for the joint coinage of Frankfurt, Hesse-Darmsadt and Nassau-Saarbrucken. Obverse: imperial orb with value, date above; reverse: twin crosshairs cantonned with the arms of Mainz, Hessen-Darmstadt, Nassau and Frankfurt. Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1625, 1628-30, 1632, 1635-36 and is cheap in low grade. As joint coinage, it was intended to circulate throughout the Main river valley. This date comew with or without the mintmaster's initials "BS".
