Künker sale 386, lot 4708

This specimen was lot 4708 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €24,000 (about US$31,013 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Georg Friedrich von Greiffenklau zu Vollraths, 1626-1629. Goldgulden 1627, Frankfurt am Main. Prägung des Rheinischen Münzvereins. Vierfeldiges Wappen//Blumenkreuz, in den Winkeln die Wappen von Mainz, Köln, Pfalz (Reichsapfel) und Trier. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Die Prägung erfolgte für Würzburg zur Auslösung der an Brandenburg-Ansbach verpfändeten Stadt Kitzingen. (archbishopric of Mainz, George Frederick of Greiffenklau zu Vollraths, 1626-29, goldgulden of 1627, Frankfurt mint, struck according to the Rhine standard. Obverse: quartered arms; reverse: floriate cross cantonned with the arms of Mainz, Cologne, Trier and the Palatinate. Extremely rare, extremely fine. This coinage was made for Würzburg to redeem the town of Kitzingen, which was mortgaged to Brandenburg-Ansbach.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This rare type was also struck in 1626.
