This specimen was lot 20406 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 5 Sen, Year 7 (1874). Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Exceedingly radiant and lustrous, this shimmering near-Gem is further enlivened by some hints of deeper toning accentuating the devices." This type was struck 1873-77, 1880, 1892 and converted to copper-nickel after 1889. Altho the 1874 is very scarce, the 1880 and 1892 are essentially uncollectible. Varieties exist as to whether the characters are connected or not.
