Japan 1874 (M7) 5 yen
This specimen was lot 50068 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted,
"JAPAN. 5 Yen, Year 7 (1874). Osaka Mint. Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. A very elusive date, with designs that are fully struck and surfaces that display rich frost, with an overlay of highly original tone on both sides. A notable coin in this nearly as-struck quality, with only a single example exceeding it in the PCGS grading census for the date. From the Pinnacle Collection."
This type was struck 1872-97 in substantial quantities but only the 1872 and 1873 are not extremely rare. As the weight of the five yen was reduced to 4.16 g in 1897, it suggests that all the other dates were retained by the government and then melted to make the lighter weight coin.
Recorded mintage: 728,082.
Specification: 8.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21.8 mm diameter.
