This specimen was lot 21141 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. Yen, Year 7 (1874). PCGS Genuine--Filed Rims, AU Details Secure Holder. RARE date. [Counter] Clockwise spiral on fiery pearl. First year of issue for this type. Sharply struck with attractive toning. A few insignificant marks of edge." This one year variety is rare. The clockwise spiral variety (Y-A25.2) of 1874-87 is common tho the 1874 is also rare. Gold yen also exist for 1874.

Recorded mintage: 942,006 (including Y-A25.2).

Specification: 26.96 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38.6 mm diameter.
