This specimen was lot 71153 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 10 Sen, Year 18 (1885). PCGS MS-66+ Secure Holder. Type II. Previously housed in an old NGC holder without bar code as MS-68, slab insert included. Flashy with red and green toning. A lovely little GEM with good eye appeal. Ex: Superior Stamp & Coin December 6-7, 1996, lot 975." This type, roughly equal to a dime, was struck 1873-1906 and is common in all grades. The superseding type (KM Y29), issued 1907-12, was 2.25 g, 0.720 fine silver. The last silver ten sen was struck in 1917.
