This specimen was lot 33386 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $79. The catalog description[1] noted, "Meiji 5 Sen Year 6 (1873) MS65 NGC. Shimmering fields evince a slight die crack running along 3/4 of the circumference of the obverse, while die polish lines to the left of the denomination on the reverse only testify to the extremely high quality of the present offering. Type II with the character 'sen' unconnected." This type was struck 1873-77, 1880, 1892 and converted to copper-nickel after 1889.
Recorded mintage: 5,593,172 (all varieties).
