This specimen was lot 1344 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, October 2010), where it sold for $230. The catalog description[1] noted,

"JAPAN. Meiji Emperor, 1867-1912. Copper 1 Sen, Year 9 (1876). Dragon clutching Pearl of Celestial Wisdom in dotted circle. Rv. Kiku crest over value in Chrysanthemum and Pawlonia wreath. Largely mellow glowing mint red. MS-63 RB (NGC).

This type was struck 1873-77 in large numbers and is common in circulated condition. A nearly identical type with modified dragon scales was issued 1880-88.

Recorded mintage: 38,048,906.
