Japan 1876 (M9) 10 sen

Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 24136

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The first specimen was lot 24136 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description^[1] noted, "JAPAN. 10 Sen, Year 9 (1876). Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Type II. A lustrous coin with pleasing, original surfaces and largely devoid of toning." This twenty sen was struck for the Meiji emperor 1873-77, 1880, 1885-88, 1891-1906. Proofs exist of this date.

Recorded mintage: 11,890,000, a common date.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.800 fine silver, 17.6 mm diameter.
