This specimen was lot 21454 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $460. The catalog description[1] noted, "Meiji 8 (1875) Rin, MS63 RB PCGS, scarce variety with the two portions of the character Mei not connected." This type was struck 1873-84 in large numbers and is common in circulated condition. None were struck after 1892. Ten rin = one sen and 1000 rin = one yen.
Recorded mintage: 3,718,840 (a slightly better date).
Specification: 0.91 g, copper, 15.75 mm diameter.
