This specimen was struck for Japan by the Tokyo mint, which issued this type 1889-97. This five sen superseded a previous silver issue struck 1873-77, 1880, 1892. Except for year 28, most dates are common and are virtually worthless in the condition shown.
Recorded mintage: 28,841,944.
Specification: 4.7 g, copper-nickel, 20.6 mm diameter.
