This specimen was lot 72412 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 5 Sen, Year 23 (1890). Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. A delightfully attractive Near Gem, this light gray specimen exhibits an appealing peripheral tone to augment its allure." This type was struck 1889-97 and is common in all grades below Uncirculated.
