Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 24134

This specimen was lot 24134 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 10 Sen, Year 6 (1873). Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Type II. (PCGS insert incorrect with Type I). An attractive coin with satiny luster and a bare hint of almond toning." This ten sen was struck for the Meiji emperor 1873-77, 1880, 1885-88, 1891-1906. Varieties exist with the sen connected (common) or not connected (very scarce).

Recorded mintage: 5,109,951, a common date.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.800 fine silver, 17.6 mm diameter.
