India 1916(c) rupee
This specimen was lot 21096 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Rupee, 1916 (C). Calcutta Mint. NGC PROOF-65. Single finest graded of the date at either NGC or PCGS. Noted as a restrike on the holder. Mirror fields, slightly mottled attractive tone on the obverse displaying hues of blue and heather purple while the reverse remains practically tone free. A lovely example sure to excite even the most advanced collector of Indian numismatics." The rupees of George V were struck 1912-22 and 1935-36 and most dates are common. Proofs are rare. The Bombay mint contributed another 97,900,000 in 1916.
