India 1916(c) 1/12 anna
This specimen was lot 72630 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/12 Anna Restrike, 1916. Calcutta Mint. George V. PCGS PROOF-64 Red. Quite majestic and radiant, this dazzling near-Gem offers rich red surfaces and great mirroring in the fields, with die polishing observed." The twelfth anna was 1/192nd of a rupee and was the smallest denomination struck under the predecimal system. It was struck in moderate numbers throughout the Raj until 1942. The 1916 is common. The absence of a dot below the date marks this as a product of the Calcutta mint. The Bombay mint also struck this type 1923-28 and 1936.
