This quarter anna was struck at the Calcutta mint during World War One. The type was struck 1912-36 and is common in all grades but still makes a handsome coin in nice condition. This is the key date. The Bombay mint also struck this type but only in 1924-28, 1930 and 1936. A quarter anna was one sixty fourth of a rupee. This specimen was lot 22573 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Anna, 1916-(C). ICG MS-64 RD. RARE DATE, with the lowest mintage of the entire 21 year series. Bright orange mint luster with plenty of flash." This specimen was lot 2764 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $53.55. The catalog description[2] noted, "BRITISH INDIA: George V, 1910-1936, AE ¼ anna, 1916(c), NGC graded MS61 BR."

Recorded mintage: 1,632,000. None were struck in 1915.

Specification: 4.72 g, bronze, 25.4 mm diameter, plain edge.
