from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71688

This specimen was lot 71688 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 2 Annas, 1916-(C). Calcutta Mint. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. Tied for the finest certified by PCGS, this minor features mild yellow and gray toning with some luster pushing through." This two annas was struck at the Calcutta mint during World War One. This enormous mintage consumed 289 metric tons of metal. The type was struck 1912-17 and is common in all grades but still makes a handsome coin in nice condition. It was converted to copper-nickel in 1918 and struck in that alloy until 1941.

Recorded mintage: 197,878,000 plus more from Bombay.

Specification: 1.46 g, 0.917 fine silver, 15.7 mm diameter.
