Sincona sale 38, lot 1442

This specimen was lot 1442 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Usman Ali Khan II, 1911 - 1948 (1329 - 1368 H) Ashrafi 1924 (1342 H.). Vorzüglich. (Jaipur, Usman Ali Khan II, 1911-48 (AH 1329-1368) ashrafi of 1924, Extremely fine.)"

This specimen is actually a half ashrafi. The type was struck AH1337-AH1367. The Indian princely state of Hyderabad was one of the few large enough and wealthy enough to mint an extensive series of gold coins. This type, struck for Mir Usman Ali Khan (AH 1329-1367 or 1911-48 A.D.), is listed for AH1337-1367 and is presumably common. It was accompanied by 1/8, 1/4 and one ashrafi.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.59 g, .910 fine gold, this specimen 5.59 g.

Catalog reference: KM Y56.2. Fr-1166.
