Hyderabad H3064-31137r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31137 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hyderabad. Mir Usman Ali Khan gold Ashrafi AH1342//14 (1924) MS66 NGC. A fairly scarce and underrated type, this brilliant issue offers highly lustrous surfaces with a hint of a pleasing matte quality. The fields are impeccable and yield a charming golden-orange tone scattered throughout." This specimen is actually a half ashrafi. The type was struck AH1337-AH1367. The Indian princely state of Hyderabad was one of the few large enough and wealthy enough to mint an extensive series of gold coins. This type, struck for Mir Usman Ali Khan (AH 1329-1367 or 1911-48 A.D.), is listed for AH1337-1367 and is presumably common. It was accompanied by 1/8, 1/4 and half ashrafi.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.18 g, .910 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM-Y57a, Fr-1165.
