SB223-73621r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73621 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Hyderabad. 8 Annas, AH 1342//Year 13 (1923). Hyderabad Mint. Mir Osman Ali Khan (under George V as Emperor). NGC MS-63. The dove gray hue across the surfaces gains a slightly yellowish quality when dipped under a lamp. There are no traces of wear or handling on this magnificent Choice survivor, and contact marks are also notably absent." The princely state of Hyderabad was one of the last absorbed into the Republic of India in 1948. It was also the largest state and residence of the last remnant of Mughal suzerainty in central India. Many of the issues, including this one, show the Chahar Minar gateway on the obverse. This type was struck intermittently AH 1337, 1342-1343 and 1354 but all of the dates are priced the same. Eight annas made one half rupee.

Recorded mintage: unknown but uncommon.

Specification: 5.58 g, 0.818 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-Y52.
