Honduras 1896 5 centavos
This specimen was lot 1856 in Classical Numismatic Group's auction of the Richard Lissner collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $272.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONDURAS, Republic. 1840-pres. AR 5 Centavos. Tegucicalpa mint. Dated 1896/18. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Gem uncirculated with deep patina and flashes of gold iridescence. Only specimen ever graded and it is a real gem." The specimen shown is a high grade example of a type struck in Honduras 1886 and 1895-96. Earlier silver five centavos exist dated 1871, 1879 and 1884-86. Most show evidence of the primitive conditions in which they were made.
