Honduras SB816-21020r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21020 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONDURAS. Peso, 1896. NGC MS-63. Tied for finest graded with two other pieces at NGC. Horizontal 8 repunched in date. Struck with clashed dies, and without a trace of circulation. Bright and flashy with nearly prooflike fields. An astonishing example of a type normally encountered with significant wear or with problems. To locate a CHOICE BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED piece like this one is a real find." This type was issued irregularly 1883-1913 but never in large quantities. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and it is unlikely the government ever had access to much bullion.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not common.

Specification: 1.61 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-7; KM-56.
