Holland 1749 gulden
This specimen was lot 32268 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $63,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Aesthetic Masterpiece from Holland. Provincial gold Proof Gulden 1749 PR63 NGC. An exceedingly difficult type to find struck in gold to a 4 Ducats weight, where even Delmonte does not note this date, while the 1748 issues receive an R3 rating. Regardless, any of these off-metal strikings are downright rare, especially when encountered in anything comparable aesthetically and conditionally. Embossed with exacting precision upon the highly reflective flan, the visual character of the piece at hand remains undeniable and will surely land this in the collection of a quality-conscious collector. From the Coenen Collection." This is the only date recorded in the SCWC as struck in gold. Silver issues come in plain (1694-1749) and reeded edge (1748-94) and span 1694, 1703, 1713-16, 1721, 1734-38, 1748-49, 1762-65, 1790-94. The silver type is common altho 1749 is a scarce date.
