Hamburg, on the North Sea, was one of two imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen was the other. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany. This type was struck 1890-1913 while Hamburg was part of the Empire, the collapse of which ended the last local coinages. Proofs exist for some dates but not 1905.
